Important: MyFinCalc is an educational website. The information and tools provided here are not personalised financial advice. Always consult a qualified, licensed financial advisor, tax professional, or accountant before making significant financial decisions.
1. Educational purpose only
MyFinCalc is a free educational resource. The calculators, articles, examples, charts, and any other content on this Site are provided for general informational and educational purposes only. They are not intended to be — and should not be relied upon as — financial, investment, tax, legal, accounting, retirement, or any other type of professional advice.
Personal finance is deeply individual. What is appropriate for one person may be inappropriate or even harmful for another. The right financial decision depends on your specific circumstances: your income, expenses, debts, risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation, country of residence, tax bracket, and many other factors that no general calculator can fully account for.
2. We are not licensed advisors
The MyFinCalc team is not registered, licensed, or authorised as financial advisors, investment advisors, tax preparers, accountants, or legal professionals in any jurisdiction. Specifically:
- We are not a Financial Advice Provider under the New Zealand Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013
- We are not registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, FINRA, or any state regulator
- We are not authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority
- We are not licensed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission
- We are not certified public accountants, chartered accountants, or tax preparers in any jurisdiction
If you need personalised advice, please consult a properly licensed professional in your country.
3. Calculator limitations
3.1 Simplified models
Every calculator on this Site uses a simplified mathematical model. Real-world finance involves variables that are difficult or impossible to model: inflation, market volatility, changes in personal circumstances, tax law revisions, employer policy changes, currency fluctuations, and unforeseen life events. Calculator outputs are estimates, not predictions.
3.2 Tax data accuracy
Our salary and tax-related calculators use published tax brackets and rates for the supported countries (currently New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, United States, and Canada). We make a reasonable effort to keep these tables current, but:
- Tax laws change throughout the year, and there may be a lag between when a change takes effect and when our calculators are updated
- We do not account for every deduction, credit, or special circumstance available in any jurisdiction
- State, provincial, regional, council, and municipal taxes are not included unless explicitly stated
- Self-employment, business income, capital gains, and non-standard income types may not be modelled
Always verify tax calculations with official sources (IRD, ATO, HMRC, IRS, CRA) or a qualified tax professional before relying on them.
3.3 Investment return assumptions
Calculators that model investment growth (Compound Interest, FIRE, Retirement Savings, How Much to Invest) require an assumed annual rate of return. Past performance does not guarantee future results. The "average market return of 7%" commonly referenced is a long-term historical average for U.S. equities, after inflation. Actual returns vary widely year to year and may be significantly different over your specific time horizon. Some years see negative returns. Some decades see flat or negative real returns. Diversification, fees, taxes, and behaviour all affect actual outcomes.
3.4 Inflation, fees, and taxes
Unless explicitly stated, calculators may not fully account for the impact of inflation, investment fees, transaction costs, or taxes on returns. These factors materially reduce real-world outcomes. A nominal 7% return becomes substantially less after accounting for them.
4. Investment risk
All investments carry risk, including the risk of partial or total loss of capital. The value of investments can go down as well as up. Higher potential returns generally come with higher potential losses. Markets are influenced by economic, political, and unpredictable global events.
Specifically:
- Stock markets can decline significantly and remain depressed for extended periods
- Real estate values are not guaranteed to appreciate
- Bonds carry interest rate, credit, and inflation risk
- Cryptocurrency, commodities, and alternative assets are highly volatile
- "Safe" investments still carry inflation risk and reinvestment risk
Never invest money you cannot afford to lose. Never make investment decisions based solely on a calculator output or a blog article.
